Individual Case Study

Adulthood

Adulthood is the thrilling sequence to the hard hitting film Kidulthood. It shows the life of young adults as they have grown up from the teenagers they once were, in Kidulthood, and also the reality of what life is like in London. Drugs, sex and crime is what the film is based around.
The primary audience for Adulthood is teenagers aged around 15-23. This is because they can understand what the movie is about better than anyone else as they may have seen some of the same actions and problems that the film shows. Also, the film shows to us the audience not to use violence as it does not answer everything and puts sense into teenagers. They can see from the film that if they commit a crime then it will affect them in the future and may lead to other consequences in the future. The trailer starts off quietly with a woman in bed lying next to the main character (Sam) and telling him of how she was when she was 15 years old. Then the fast upbeat soundtrack comes into the scene and the shots used are fast and short. The soundtrack matches to the speed of the shots and this is a key role in the success of the trailer. Furthermore, there are lots of violent scenes which gives the audience a little taster of what is going to be in the film. Also, the trailer has shots of all the characters that are included in the movie and many of them are from the previous film, Kidulthood, and also includes many new characters. The short and fast shots attract people to watch it as they have been given a clue to what will be in the film.

Self Evaluation

Attainment (2)
I gave myself a 2 for attainemnt because i believe i am trying my hardest to do the best in Media Studies. I put alot of effort into the lessons and believe i come out of every lesson having learnt something new.

Effort (1)
This is because i contribute in class as much as i can and i am a active learner. I try to get involved with all activites we do in class and always give my own opinion on a topic.

Punctuality (3)
I do not always come to lessons on time and have missed one or two lessons. However, i still catch up with the work and do everything.

Submission And Quality Of Homework (2)
i have handed in all my homework and believe it is to good quality but not the best there is.

Ability to work Independtly (2)
i can work by myself and work in groups but feel that i work better in groups. I also stick my head down and do my work myself when there is work to be done.

Quality of Writing (2)
I believe i use Media Studies language frequently but as it is early stages i do not it in every sentence and do not know the meaning of all the words.

Organisation of Media Folder (1)
I organise all my work so that nothing gets lost and so that no work mixes with other subjects. I have seperated my media folder into two sections, one for Mr Bush and the other for Ms Holiday. By doing this i know where my work is for which teacher.

Oral Contribution in Class (1)
I contribute in class all the time and never keep quiet. This is because i always have an opinion and feel people should listen to it if it is necessary to the topic.

Media Awards

The 3 productions that i thought were the best are:

A Rappers Ambition:
This was because the production was about an upcoming rapper trying to break his way into the music industry. I liked it alot becuase i believe chasing your dreams and achieveing them is the best and hardest thing to do in life. The trailer itself was very intersting as there were many different shots used and lots of great editing. Many of the shots were faded into the next shot and cut. Also, the soundtrack was unique and went well with the speed of the trailer which was very impressive. There were lots of different scenes which shows that it took the group a long time to produce the trailer and took alot of effort and time.

Street Crime:
This production was one of my favourites as street crime is a rising issue in recent years and shows what really happens on the streets of London. The production was very interesting and was intense as it had scenes of people gettin robbed and gangsters talking. Even though it was only shown for around 10 or so seconds at the media awards i had a chance to watch it at home as one of my friends had it on DVD. The group showed that they did alot of research into the life of crime and there was a variety of different shots used.

Crime:
The last production that i thought was one of the best was Crime. This production showed real life issues that have been around for many years, drugs and what effect it has on you and others around you. They clearly showed that they done alot of research into drugs and were able to get a first hand interview with a druggy. There were many shots used which showed different types of drugs. Also, they had creative background music which matched the speed of the shots. This made the whole prodcution flow. Furthermore, some scenes were perfectly edited to match the music.

Internet Regulations

There are many debates going on around the world about issues surrounding the internet, such as:

  • Illegal downloading of music files and videos. Also people are downloading programmes which is servely costing businesses sales. These illegal downloads are done from websites and other things such as limewire.
  • When people access certain websites there are no rules and restricitions on them. So therefore anyone can go onto any website, even if they are not allowed to.
  • Social networking site reveals information about you which could in the future be potentially harmful to you as people may find out information on someone. Even though some websites say all the information is kept secret it still gets out to everyone.
  • Since there is alot of information on the internet about certain people, hackers may be able to hack into someones computer.
  • There is cases of phadeophilia on the internet as men have access to pictures of young children on the internet
  • Furthermore, websites that give out information such as Wikipedia are editable so therefore may not all the time give correct information and may be wrong. This then sends out false information to the world and is basically useless.
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers.

An Anthropological Introduction to Youtube

0:00 Introduction, Youtubes Big numbers.

At the beginning Stephen Weismasser ABC, quoted "you arent going to turn passive consumers into active trollers on the internet". In 1948 ABC started broadcasting and they became the thrid network to do so. They have been broadcasting for 60 years now and as there is 3 networks, if they broadcasted 24 hours a day everyday for the past 60 years they would show over 1.5million hours of programming. However, Youtube produced more in the last 6 months without producers and just included normal people. on Youtube there is over 9000 hours uploaded everyday which is equivilent to nearly 400 ongoing channels, but it is 200,000 3 minute video clips. It is not mass media! Also, 88% of the content that is coming through is new and original.

2:00 Numa Numa and celebration of Webcams.

Numa Numa was a video that was created and became a big hit in 2003, some people say it was viewed over 600,000 million times. The video was broadcasted all over the globe. The video was created in Febuary 2005 and at this time Youtube was being created aswell. On April 23rd 2005 was when the first videos were posted by the 3 men and before it use to be difficult to post videos onto the internet but now everyones doing it there has been over 58,000 views made on the Numa Numa video. People used webcams to communicate with others all around the world and it was a new way for millions to connect with each other.

5:53 The machine is Us/ing us and the new mediascape.

Micheal Wesch who created his own video thought about what it meant to move from text on paper to digital text, its not only about information but about linking people in ways we have never been linked before because now is changing and now every 6months theres a new tool to connect people in.

It went onto digg.com, more people can watch it. It also went on del.icio.us people started tagging the videos which bookmarks it. This is called "User generated Organization". He also became number one and it was translated into different languages within a short period of time.

12:16 Intorducing our Research team.

In the last 2 years 10 students every spring get together. They watch videos and write about them this is then reported onto the data base stystem.

12:56 Who is on Youtube?

  • 25% of the people are 35 and over.
  • 25% of the people are 12-17 year olds.
  • 12% are children
  • 18-24 and 25-30 are the strongest (who have posted videos)
  • 18-25 are in over 50% of the videos.

13:25 Whats on Youtube? Charlie bit my finger, Soulja Boy etc.

Most videos on You Tube are home videos and 15% are remixes/remakes. When souljah boy posted his video and dance on youtube, it generated the same kind of publicity the Numa-Numa video did. It was remade, remixed and replayed over and over again until he got signed with a record deal.

17:04 5% of vids are personal Vlogs addressed to the Youtube community, Why?

Almost 10,000 videos are addressed to Youtube "Community" every day.
People so this because they would like the Youtube users to know what is happening around us in the world.

17.30 Youtube to context. The loss of community and networked individualism (Wellman)

The loss of community may be responsible for the boom of social networking sites. People have regained their sense of community in the virtual realm.

18.41 Cultural inversion; individualism and community.

Value;

Community.. Relationships.. Authenticity

Youtube comes in this, what we see in youtuve is shaped by this. Robert Putnom commented in 1995 "My hunck is that meeting in an electronic forum is not the equivalent of meeting in a bowling alley.

25.00 The webcam: Everybody is watching nobody is ("Content Collapse")

Many people say that when talking into the webcam it is as if everybody is watchin ut where nobody is. The most private place your bedroom can soon be the most public place due to youtube. We know ourselves through our understanding of how others understand us.

27.58 The anonymusly of watching youtubes: haters and lovers.

When we watch youtube we are generally anoynous as people cannot see us watching it. There are lots of bad and rude language that people post on videos.

34.02 Youtube Drama; Striving for popularity.

The only way to be seen is to make a video that people will want to watch. to get more veiws and to be placed best rated and most viewed.

36.55 Youtubes Anthenticity crisis: the story of lonelygirl15

Lonelygirl15 started Vlogging in june 2006, in a matter of weeks she was youtubes second most subscribed, however soon people started questionning her and realised she was fake. There was much debate going on about the issue.

39.50 Reflection on authenticity

People no longer know what is real or fake on youtube and they dont know whether they trust the site anymore or not.

51.15 Conclusion by bnessell973

Many people upload videos on youtube for many of their own reasons. Many people do it because they enjoy it, and also gives them something to do. Most people believe videos uploaded on youtube should be creative and made to change the world but people upload them to live in.
